Location & getting there:
It is about 2 hours away from Cancun Airport towards the south (Tulum). Now we have bridges and less speedbumps... with the exception of Playa del Carmen...
Ambience: Very American, for they have come here a long time ago and built their homes by the beach, cliffs. The ambience is also upper middle and high class.
Ideal for: Snorkelers, scuba divers and people who wants a quiet vacation.
Not ideal for: Singles looking for fun of a big city.
Things to do: Just the beaches, a beautiful bay like the one in Xel Ha and the best coral reef from Cancun to Tulum. Other than that, there is almost nothing, not even a movie theater.
Shopping: Almost none. Get your stuff in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Of course, Cancun will be cheaper and with more products than Playa del Carmen.
Food: Mostly American.
Turtles: Yes, the turtles are one of the most asked questions here, so here is the explanation: In April arrive the first turtles to "make baby turtles", and check out the posibles places to leave their eggs and then come back to the sea. During May, June and July, turtles come back to leave their eggs, the first turttle is "carey", then "caguama" and at the end the "white" turtle. Sometimes "laud turtle" arrives. Then we have a period of 45 or 55 days and during August and September the baby turtles are born and they start their way to the sea, of course right now there are programms to help turtles keeping them in a special place before getting to the sea, like that they are stronger and can survive predators better.
Transportation: Better to take a taxi or rent a car. Public transportation is available (colectivos: kind of vans for a route) and buses, just be careful, they drive too fast.
Beach conditions: Beautiful when they are, others are full of seagrass or rocky.
